Ancient Culture at
Museum of Science and Industry

Many visitors to North West England will be aware of the superb Egyptology collection at Manchester University, the gift of 19th North West industrialists to the city. Next year, there will be an additional visiting attraction at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry in Castlefield, which is the first British host to a touring exhibition entitled Ancient Cultures.

The exhibition, which was developed by Finnish Science Centre, Heureka, concentrates on everyday life aspects of three major cultures of the world: Egypt, Assyria, and the Indus Valley.  The exhibition consists of mainly interactive exhibits and so Egyptophiles will be able to look at a replica of an Egyptian house, dress up in ancient Egyptian costume, write love charms in hieroglyphs and play the Egyptian game Senet.

There will also be insights into Egyptian medicine and Mesopotamian recipes – the two are not related, we hope.

Ancient Cultures will be at the Museum of Science and Industry, Liverpool Road, Castlefield, Manchester  M3 4FP
from 19 January until 13 May 2001.

The admission charge for adults is £6.50, and this includes access to the exhibition. 5 – 18 year olds can see the permanent exhibitions free of charge, but will pay a £2 fee for Ancient Cultures. Contact the Museum on 0161 833 0027 for details of group rates and bookings.
